Have you uploaded your photo yet?
As we announced yesterday, your LinkedIn profile is now ready for your photo upload in the Profile section. As Adam mentioned in his blog post yesterday:
Adding a profile photo is one of the most commonly requested features for the LinkedIn profile, primarily because many people (like me) tend to recognize their colleagues and classmates more reliably by face than by name. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, and with this feature we hope to make it easier for people to form richer professional connections online.
We also wanted to shine the spotlight on the team behind this particular feature update. So, here they are, just after the release of the photo feature with their profile picture:
The team behind LinkedIn Photos
Georg Puchta | Sr. Software Engineer
Adam Nash | Sr. Director, Product
James Richards | Sr. Software Engineer
Mike Lin | UI Designer, LinkedIn
Steve Ganz | Sr. Web Developer
Riccardo Ferreti | Software Engineer
Elliot Shmukler | Principal Product Manager
Adding a photo to your profile is pretty simple. Check out Adam Nash’s recent post that outlines the steps to do so.

Well, i try to upload a photo but allways get a upload timeout. It’s a 2.45MB jpg file.
Anyone else see this problem. My internet obviously otherwise works well, problem is with or without active firewall. no idea how i actually should upload the photo and complete my profile again.
nice and welcomed new feature – but does not work very well ?!

So you killed it… first the application servers started slowing down, then you thought you’d add some servers and now the router is horked up.
Sorry for so much trouble! Hope everything gets back on track soon.

What is the business reason for photos? To me it takes away from the “lean and mean” productive feel of Linkedin. Seems very “me too” to add this feature.
Tanmoy September 29th, 2007
Great feature !
It would be good if a mechanism to notify me if my connections (immediate ones) add a photo. This could be added to the profile updates area. This way I can know if my connections have added their pics.
Also, as mentioned earlier by someone, a notification in people lists (while searching, or while displaying my contact list) that a photo is available would be really helpful too !

Hi, after some fails I was able to upload my photo.
I think it is a great feature and just have two comments:
1 – The final displayed photo is very small…I think would be worth to test bigger sizes. And if it will be so small, the capability to upload up to 4 Mb does not make sense as all this resolution will not be used.
2 – Agreed with others about notifying when the others at my network post theirs photo.

Hi all,
The issue that a few users were facing has been remedied. Adam Nash has a more complete response here (http://tinyurl.com/2ad5le).
Thanks for your feedback and suggestions. If you have any further questions, feel free to let us know. I can be reached at msundar@linkedin.com.

Hi everyone,
As expected, we received a lot of interest in the profile photos on day one, and we had to tweak a few things as some users were getting errors. Those issues were resolved early on Friday morning.
As for feature suggestions & questions:
- Tanmoy: We’re looking at ways to integrate photo events with our other features. This is definitely an idea worth thinking about.
- Andrew: See my other blog post, but the short answer is that there are two major reasons we added photos. The first is that most people recognize people by face more easily than by name, and we believe photos will help professionals connect & communicate more easily on LinkedIn. The second reason is that in most major markets outside the US, having a photo is considered customary for a professional CV. We now have over 7 million international professionals on LinkedIn.
Hope this helps. Love the photo, Mario!

I have done everything I can to upload a photo and the server always times out. The same restrictions exist for the profile pic on facebook, and yet, I had no problem uploading a photo there. I’ve done everything including trying to just upload a thumbnail icon that is less than 1/20th the size you indicate you can handle…and even that times out. HELP ME PLEASE!

@ Bobbie Ward,
Some members cannot upload their photos if they are over the max pixel size of 4000×4000. If you’re a Windows user, you might try the following to compress your photo:
If you have Windows, a Photo can be compressed quite easily through the “Paint” program in “Accessories”. Here’s how:
1. Open Paint.
2. Open your photo in Paint.
3. Open the “Image” menu.
4. Click “Stretch and Skew”.
5. Enter “50″ in both the vertical and horizontal fields and save.
6. Click “File” and “Save”.
7. Then try uploading this photo.

I have been trying to upload a new picture for almost a week now, but it just does not work, the file is pretty small so that’s not the problem, but keeps timing out. Pixel size is only 250×297…

@Martin – Try the second section of this FAQ from our Customer Service Frequently asked Questions Knowledge base. Some members have had success with this even though the image does appear to exceed the size limit. If this doesn’t work contact customer service and attach your photo to see if they can trouble shoot your issue.
