LinkedIn’s 1 million UK member milestone
LinkedIn just hit a bit of a milestone this month internationally – we reached the million member mark in the UK. With nearly two thousand British professionals signing up on any given day, LinkedIn has become the go-to site for those who want to advance their professional know-how (not to mention their know-who). Apparently, the fashionable set agrees – the UK edition of Esquire Magazine has just nominated LinkedIn for a Man At The Top Business Award in the Best Business Tool category.
We want to take this opportunity to thank all our million UK members – and those from within the UK and around the world who invited them – for making this happen. We’ll be celebrating this week with a few of our own events in London, Birmingham and Manchester. But if you’re elsewhere in the UK, or elsewhere in the world, why not take this opportunity to reconnect with your own professional network? Take them out for a pint and all that. But dress to impress – Esquire might be watching and you don’t want to disappoint!
Also, we’re hosting events in a few cities (London, Manchester, Birmingham) to coincide with the milestone. LinkedIn staff will be there, but more importantly, it will be a great chance to get together in person with other local LinkedIn members.
Space is limited. Please RSVP below to the address corresponding to your preferred city. If we have a spot for you, we’ll email back with the details. All events are in the evening.

Liz,
I have recently been invited to the First Million UK group, and I think it’s great. I would like to know what are the plan from LinkedIn to create an learning and connecting environment for the group. It will be great to have this +1 million of individuals learning and connecting with each others.
I understand that the group is under the ownership of LinkedIn (I guess), will you be interested to take this group forward through a web2.0 environment in order to have people learning, sharing, growing, educating, transforming each other.
I will be more than happy to work other open-minded individuals to bring such project forward under the direction or leadership of LinkedIn.
regards,
Arnnei Speiser October 25th, 2007
Hi Liz,
As I’m now in the UK for a while I feel I’m taking part in the First Million UK LinkedIn.
I’d like to join the First Million UK group and I don’t know how. Being a LinkedIn power networker and the developer of the LICM (LinkedIn Contacts Management) system, I feel I can contribute to others with my expirience and hope for mutual support.
I’d be happy to participate in one of the events and lecture on how to use the LICM for business purposes.
Regards,
Arnnei Speiser

@Olivier: Thanks for the suggestion. At this time, we don’t have plans to use the group for such purposes, although many of your suggestions are in line with the philosophy of LinkedIn as a whole. We’ll be continuing to develop groups in general to serve more needs.
@Arnnei: Thanks for your interest, but the badge is meant for UK registered members only. I don’t even have one, and I set it up!!! There are no shortage of groups to participate in, though, so I trust you’ve found some that suit your needs.

Hi Liz,
Can you explain the purpose of this First Million group?
How do UK registered LinkedIn users join it please? I couldn’t see it in the Groups list.
Thanks,
David.

David:
This one is really just a badge for your profile – a digital bumper sticker if you like. Every UK member who receives marketing emails from LinkedIn did, or soon will, get an email with details of how to add it but in case we missed you, I’ve sent you a link you can use as well.
Thanks,
Liz

I am also interested in knowing a) If I am a first million member & if so, how I join the group.
David J W Bailey November 17th, 2007
hey! I was here YEARS AGO and no one invited me? Why Not? I was at a meeting sponsored by and addressed a LinkedIn Founder and I felt like a CHUMP for not being invited.
Please, invite me!

@allan: i just checked your profile, and it looks like you were within our first million members. every UK member in the 1st million got an email (if they elect to receive emails from LinkedIn) with a link on how to add the badge. I’ve send you a link which you can use.
@david: i see you have the badge on your profile, so i trust it’s all been sorted out by now?

Hi Theo:
I’ve sent you a link so you can put the badge on your profile.
For everyone else reading this, know that we are in the process of sending everyone emails which contain a link to a page that gives instructions on how to get the badge, as well as a short guide as to get more out of LinkedIn (see link below). We’re almost finished sending the emails, so please check your inbox. (Note that we comply rigorously with anti-spam rules, so if you want to receive these sort of emails, make sure you’ve opted into them in your communication preferences.)
We also advertised this on the site to all UK members during several weeks in October and November, so make sure you check your homepage & profile page for onsite advertisements. Between the emails and the onsite, there’s been an opportunity for everyone to participate.
Please note that this is a limited-time “event”; at the end of November, we’re going to stop issuing badges. But there are plenty of other groups to join, so please look out for them.
For some tips & tricks about using LinkedIn in general, please see this page:

thanks,
Liz

Hi Liz,
I suspect that I may also qualify for the First Million club as I joined back in 2005. Could you advise if this is correct? No e-mail as of yet with an invite…I’m all dressed up and no party to go to!!!
Many thanks,
Dave

Hi Liz,
Could you send through details of how I may obtain the badge please. I’ve been with LinkedIn for ages and I’ve seen some people that I invited to join LinkedIn with the badge – and I’m a bit green, as I’d like one ;-)
Kind regards,
Jon.

Hi Liz, I have been away travelling for some time now and have recently returned to the UK. I have been reading about the 1 million milestone of UK members LinkedIn has received and thought that I would have received the email to join this group. I have never received the email and I am a little confused as I am sure that as a valued member of LinkedIn I would have been invited. Could you maybe send me the link so that I could add this digital badge to my profile, much appreciated.
Amanda Nuttall November 21st, 2007
Hi Liz,
Please could you also send through details how I may obtain a badge as I have been a member for some time now.

Jonathan, Amanda: check your LinkedIn inbox for your links.
For everyone else, we are still in the process of emailing, so check to make sure you look for the LinkedIn email.
If you haven’t and you qualify (UK resident, signed up before November 2007 [it should really be the LinkedIn 1.1 million member group by that standard, but that's not as catchy] then send an email to:
groups@linkedin.com
as requests on this blog will no longer be processed.
I’m so glad to see the level of interest here, and to reiterate, many many thanks to our UK community for helping us reach this great milestone.

Hi
I first registered back in April 2006 in the Uk and have moved over to Cyprus for a time, but still have many business connections in the UK. Also most of my business is located in the UK and with this in mind I would like to be involved with this new group. Please advise as I can change my location to reflect I’m in the UK but that would defeat the idea of LinkedIn be a real-time networking tool.
Tom November 30th, 2007
Hi Liz
Please could you also send me through some information on this? I think I’ve been a mber for about three years.
Manyt hanks

Hi just wandered how we join this “group” as I joined some time ago from memory.
It’s nice to see many more UK folk finally using it.
and when is the next meetup in london.

Hi,
It appears that some of my linked in email has been spam blocked and subesquently deleted. please can you re-send the First Million invite.
Thanks.
Jonathan Black December 5th, 2007
At the risk of sounding repetitive with others, I too am wondering why I wasn’t invited since I’m sure I joined about 3 years ago when Reid Hoffman had first spoken at the event I run at the Oxford U business school. I can’t believe there were 1MM users then…ho hum. let me know
David Evans December 7th, 2007
Hi Liz, it would appear that I also have not received the invitation – would you be so kind to confirm that I am eligible and if so forward me the link to join?
Many thanks, David.

I received an invite on 24/10/2007 to join the First Million Members group. The invitation somehow got lost in a deluge of emails! I very much wish to be a member of this group as many peers are, and I feel that the lack of membership may be viewed negatively in these circles.
I wish to join the group and feel that as a member since January 2006 I am not a new member!
Mirjam April 24th, 2008
Hello – hmm well I’ve tried to join this group for a while with no luck, have just found this thread. Why is the group closed? Has it reached one million members? It must have missed me then, I was one of the first on Linked In!

How to become member of LinkedIn’s 1 million?
maybe someone should invite me?
Paul Buckle June 16th, 2008
I seemed to have missed the invite to, and have only just located this string. I don’t know if I qualified, but I must have been pretty close.
Would linkedin reconsider re-opening the offer? After all, you were either in the first million or not?
Mario Sundar July 30th, 2008
Thanks to all of you for your comments. Since this campaign has been closed many, many months ago, we’re closing the comments on this thread.
