8 LinkedIn Tips for a more productive 2008

Ring in the new year by taking a few minutes to get the most from your professional network. Click on the tips below to make the changes now. The clock is ticking!

1. Add Job Details to Your Profile

Just listing job titles doesn’t do you justice. Descriptions of roles, responsibilities, and accomplishments will dramatically improve your appearance in search results as well as present a fuller picture of who you are.

2. Add Education to Your Profile

Finding opportunities, answers, candidates and researching your market is a lot easier when your fellow school alums can find you.

3. Choose Your Vanity URL

Add it to your business card, website, email signature, etc.

4. Import Your Address Book

Let us do all the work – in seconds you can see who in your address book is already on LinkedIn and connect with them.

5. Install the Outlook Toolbar

Effortlessly manage your network from your toolbar: get suggestions on who to invite based on email frequency, one-click invitations, update your Outlook contacts, and much more.

6. Find Answers to Hard Questions

Posting on LinkedIn Answers reaches both your connections and the broader LinkedIn network. Your network is a smart group of people–someone will know!

7. Read News About Your Company

Read what your colleagues are reading – the 2 or 3 things you NEED to know about every day. Keep your resolution to stay informed on the latest news, while increasing your efficiency!

8. Enable Your Public Profile

Places your LinkedIn profile in web search results so that the professional image you earned is presented to the world.

  1. Thanks Surya! These 8 great action steps will help jump start my business for 2008.

I’ve seen my LinkedIn profile generate more connections and links to people in my niche business.

  2. I agree that these are all great ideas – but there are many, many more things I’d like to do with LinkedIn *and I would pay extra to be able to do them.*

    - I’d like to feature my company logo as well as a personal photo.
    - I’d like to create a second vanity URL with my company name.
    - I’d like to display more URLs on my profile.

I WOULD PAY for extra promotional features like these to help me market my small business. How about it, LinkedIn?

  3. Very nice suggestions and really appropriate for the n\beginning of the year.

  4. These are all great suggestions, and I quite like That Software Guy’s ideas as well. But here’s another – for those of us that use either Apple Mail or Gmail, a toolbar or plugin that facilitates the linkages that the Outlook toolbar does for that group would be awesome and provide significant value to what must be a growing population of your user base.

    Any hopes?

  5. I have a suggestion that will result in my using LinkedIn much more than I do: give us RSS feeds of events that happen in our network. I go for weeks without logging into LinkedIn, but I bet I would login more often and poke around if I were to receive realtime notifications via RSS of people in my network changing careers, adding new photos of themselves, etc.

  6. I would love to use the Outlook toolbar, but it (the latest version 2.5.1.1606) crashes Outlook. I have contacted LinkedIn tech support, but they have not responded about it.

  7. One trick I have used is to create a hyperlink in my email sig ticker that when clicked actually takes people directly to the page where they can send me an invitation to connect networks…works great!

  8. Good tips..,
I would like to know more about how to promote myself and my services better on LinkedIn.

  9. Lou:
could you give more details on how you did that?.. i.e. what actual url you use to have people invite you?. I am trying to do the same…
    thks
