Linked[In the News]: Week of April 4, 2008

We had a number of interesting LinkedIn hits this week in the news. Here’s a quick summary of five of the most recent articles found on LinkedIn:

1. When Barbara met Deirdre! Doing good on LinkedIn – New Mexico Business Daily

My personal favorite story this week came from Megan Kamerick of the New Mexico Business Weekly who wrote an article on how two LinkedIn customers ended up doing business together. Megan interviewed two LinkedIn users, Barbara Lemaire and Deirdre Billington for her piece. Barbara (who works for a non-profit that helps homeless women rebuild their lives) met Deirdre (Big Tattoo Wines in Virginia) through a LinkedIn Group called Non-Profit Organizations of New Mexico. A few quick conversations later, Big Tattoo ended up selecting Barrett Foundation as its beneficiary in New Mexico.

As Barbara says:

It pays for organizations to have a presence on the Internet, especially on the professional networking sites like LinkedIn.com.

2. CIO Talk Radio with Lloyd Taylor – CIO Talk Radio

Lloyd Taylor (our VP of Operations seen here in all his Halloween splendor), was interviewed on CIO Talk Radio this week by Sanjog Aul. Joining him was Mark McDonald, group vice president and head of research for Gartner Executive Programs. The interview discussed social networks and the enterprise adoption challenge. 3. How LinkedIn can help build careers around open source projects – CNET Blog

Matt Asay of CNET’s “The Open Road” Blog posted an interesting article about how LinkedIn can help open-source folks find people that are using and building careers out of their open-source projects. If you’d like to read the full piece, click here

4. The classic case of LinkedIn etiquette – Entrepreneur.com

Entrepreneur.com had a neat article this week about online etiquette. LinkedIn was included in the piece. If you’d like to learn more about how to avoid sticky social situations online, check out the full article here.

5. Q&A with Patrick Crane – WGN-AM

Patrick Crane, LinkedIn’s VP of Marketing and Advertising, was recently interviewed live and on-air on WGN-AM’s WGN Overnight which is the #1 overnight radio show in the Chicago market. Patrick chatted with the show’s host, Brian Noonan, on the types of professionals most likely to be on LinkedIn and  answered live questions from the listeners.

  1. I love your site, I am not a professional journalist, however I do blog. And I have been singing the praises of the site. I am currently writing Job search tip blog, and have recommended to all those Myspace and Facebook users to close them to anyone that is not friend or not invited and open a LinkedIN account. If you would like to see my blog please go here.
I have even included a link to your website on many of my posts.

  2. I am not a professional journalist, however I am a blogger.I am currently blogging about Job Search Tip, and have recommended that all Myspace and Face book users close them to anyone but friends and invitee’s. Since many employers are now looking at these. I have mentioned LindedIN several times on my blog. I have to say this is one of the best things the internet has given us in a long time.

Here is my blog check it out.

  3. I am a huge fan of the site! I love the work that you are doing to create a rich, relationship environment.

    Some suggestions though:

    1. Add the functionality to really manage realtionships. The Outlook toolbar is a great example of this. I can be reminded to touch base with people if we haven’t emailed in 60 days. I can see when their birthday is and stay on top of it. I can use my Explorer Toolbar to capture people that I want to learn more about. But there is no comprehensive way for me to manage my relationship inside the application itself. I already use LinkedIn as a huge part of my business development strategy. Adding this functionality would move me out of my Outlook environment completely.
    2. Let me bring my contact’s full info into the application. Then this becomes my platform for everything. You guys are tight with Google – Integrate this with their Apps, Calendar, CRM and email and you’ve got THE KILLER BUSINESS APP. Nothing could touch it. I’d pay handsomely for a system that could do that because I could quintuple my efficiency.
    3. Let us fully adopt this. Right now it’s fragmented. It’s an additional step. I understand what your focus is – connecting people. Let us take it to the next step to use it as the platform for managing all of it.

As I said, I’m excited about what is happening within LinkedIn and am training people to use it in the small business arena. Add this functionality and you can revolutionize the way business gets done.

    My 2 cents.

  4. I am a Blackberry Customer and hoping to get an update on how soon will BB clients get an upgrade for us seeing that most businesses use Blackberry.

By the way. At first I really didn’t understand what Linked in was and primarily used Facebook. But now that I’m clear I’m hoping that an upgrade for BB users comes soon.
