Share and Discuss News within LinkedIn Groups
A couple of months ago, we announced the ability for groups to have discussions on LinkedIn. LinkedIn is now hosting hundreds of thousands of interesting discussions. We continue to build on the promise of allowing a richer experience within groups this week by launching a feature that allows you to share and discuss news articles within LinkedIn groups.
To share a news article with your LinkedIn Groups, click on “Submit a new article” and enter the URL you would like to share.
After submitting the article you will land on a discussion page that we have for the group to talk about what you just shared.
Stay tuned to more features that will help you make it easier to share articles with your group in the coming months.
Additionally, blog and other publishers can add the share badge to their site to encourage sharing with groups. To get information on how to do this, please visit our widgets page.

Hi Linkedin,
I’m am very happy with all of the latest developments on LinkedIn. Regarding sharing news on Linkedin, have you thought of adding a Digg Application?

I love this site!
I want to suggest some possible adjustments to the structure of the site that might get members more involved. Currently the “Discussions” are made up primarily of members advertising themselves for available positions. Would it not be possible to seperate Industry/Group Discussions and Group Member Job Search? I finally opted out of having group updates sent to me because of this problem. I understand that this is a networking site however social sites I have belonged to quickly discover that their forums area is the heart of member activity (along with chat). I am a retail professional who would be much more likely to continously return to the site to take part in pertinent industry discussions without having to wade through member self promotion in order to be part of those discussions.
A second suggestion, would it be possible to include a better indication of country of residence? Maybe the member could choose an icon of their home country’s flag.
Thanks for the opportunity to comment!
Robert

I absolutely agree with this. Several groups I would like to participate in are flooded with messages about employment and consulting opportunities. These are important, but the specific groups clearly state a purpose that has nothing to do with recruitement and job advertisements.
I posted a message about this in several groups (like CDISC Advocates), suggesting a separate section for employment and consulting opportunities. I got a lot of positive feedback about this suggestion.
Hopefully Linkin can do something with this comment.

I used this feature to post a news item about the uptake in Irish language being taught in schools to the Friends of Ireland Group. Went to the News tab, submitted a new article etc… Something went wrong – the moderator accuses me of cutting and pasting the whole page into a discussion which I didn’t do. The “moderator” wasn’t prepared to listen and blocked my access to the group.
a. not happy with the News feature.
b. disappointed by the moderator’s attitude

I just created a group “Bethany Connecticut Residents” and am trying to invite only LinkedIn people that live in my area code (not within 10 miles that the search allows). Does anyone know how to locate only people that reside in my town to invite to this group?
Thanks,
Eric Pero

I have a comment about sharing an article in “Submit News for Discussion”. Not all technical news are simply accessed via an URL. For instance, I have a very interesting article about design, which is in the AARP magazine. For anyone to access that article, he must have not only the AARP Web site, but also some explanation that I can insert in a comment box on how to get there.
Hopefully, I would like to see it next…
Sincerely: Benoit.

@ Eric Pero – In order to minimize group spamming we do require that you use email addresses to send invitations to join a group. Also the smallest radius currently available for advanced search is what you referenced: 10 miles with in the zip code you enter. I have forwarded your comments on to the product manager in charge of search for consideration in future releases. You might try utilizing the ’status’ feature by typing something like “Eric has just created the Bethany Connecticut Residents group (and attach your group url).” This will notify your network of contacts if you have your status settings open for network updates. Best of luck with your new group!

Any chance a “tags” feature will be added for news articles? We were thinking of using LinkedIn to store links for relevant articles for our company. We have a group already, but a long list of articles would be easier to peruse if you could sort articles by tags…
