“Sorry, couldn’t display the page” earlier today

Dear LinkedIn Users,

Many of you trying to use LinkedIn between 2:18am and 4:08am US Pacific time this morning, and all of you trying to use LinkedIn between 6:10am and 7:43am, were unable to get in.  This is not what we want for our users, and we are very sorry for the inconvenience caused. Rest assured, all of your postings and messages were sent out.

What caused the outage? LinkedIn uses a technology called “Message Queuing” within our site to allow our various services (for example, Network Update Service, inMails) to communicate with each other asynchronously, so that a sudden surge of usage on one part of the site will not affect performance on another.  Starting early this morning, we ran into some issues with our Message Queuing services, which caused the message queues to back up.

What’s supposed to happen in this situation is that the message queues simply store all the pending messages, and then deliver them when the receiving service is ready for them.

However, when some of our message queues backed up this morning, the services that were trying to send additional messages were unable to do so.  This caused the messages to back up into the systems trying to send the messages, causing them to fail.

We have restored the site to proper operation this morning at 7:45am US Pacific/ 3:45pm GMT, including delivery of all messages in the queue, and are analyzing why the message queues did not work so as to prevent it from happening in the future.

Again, our apologies to you for this outage.

  2. Lloyd,
    Thanks for the update.
However, since about a week I experience uploading my connections is impossible. Refreshing page, sign out/sign in/reboot does not help. Informed your customer service and they sofar have no clue and escalated. Please help, since I do love a good working LinkedIn and have a $200 worth business account. I won’t say it’s my lifeline, but it comes close <>
    Best,

  3. guys, let us know if it was a performance problem with MSMQ, if you use it.
I’m using the same on a project and might be useful information to know if the failure is related to the technology.

    thanks guys :D

  9. Hey Lloyd,

I hope you have a chance to follow up with a root cause analysis.

Linkedin popularity has soared of late. This ramp in traffic appears to be in conjunction with many new features and updates that appear in the UI. Many of us using Linkedin have seen some variability in how cached elements or queries are rendered to the user.

It would be quite interesting to see what is determined as the stress points and how these manifest in features used by the various tiers of accounts, settings, and exposed (user defined) elements of the rendered UI.

While transparency and protecting your own team IP might be at odds, the things a popular destination takes on to be a more available popular destination are often quite fascinating.

So, again, I hope to hear more details. Those details would be appreciated by many on the service.

    Thanks,
    Jay

  10. I was the VP of Operatoins for the search engine that was tied with GOogle bak in the year 2000, and you may want to try this idea.

If you are going to be down, educate your users with a clear error page that says that

    - you apologize
    - you know there is a problem
    - you are working on it
    - you expect it to be fixed by 10 AM PST

Its really frustrating to be a user and not know if LinkedIn even knows they have this problem, or if I am the only one having it.

Another nice option would be to have a brief eplanation on our home pages (maybe even in place of an ad for a day) after it happens so that we don’t have to go check the blog.

  15. This is day two of not being able to display my conections. I have not had a reply back from customer service as I did log the issue with them yesterday.

I also had a co-worker send me an invitation today, I just accepted it and that new one does not show either.

Could we please get a response to this issue?

    Thanks in advance.

  16. I am having several problems with Direct Ads at Linked in. I have tried writing emails to the Ad team but have received no response so far.

Is there a problem with Direct Ads?

    Thanks,
    Meera

  17. I have had problems with LinkedIn all week. I can’t add to my network, reply to posts, or really do anything other than look at profiles.

It asks me to enter my login info, but then says “There was an unexpected problem that prevented us from completing your request.” This has been going on for days.

What gives and when will I be able to continue adding my network – the purpose of the site??

    Many thanks,
    Justin Moore

  18. @Justin,

If you continue having recurring problems with LinkedIn, it may be an isolated incident. I’d recommend contacting our customer support team.

Let me know if the problems persist.

  19. @Meera,

Not sure what exactly you’re referring to.

  20. I have been having issues for the last few weeks and can not use linkedin. I try to communicate or log-in to send mail but I get errors like this every time: The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.

I can not send a message to customer service, it gives the same error on the page.

Please let me know how best to proceed.

    Thanks,

    Michael

  21. Messages actually get sent? Huh? That’s a new one. Usually linkein just spins its wheels whenever I ask it to do anything.

  22. @Michael,

Let me know if you are you still having the problem.

  23. @ Bill Several Recommendation issues were resolved recently. If your specific issues were not resolved with these changes, please contact Customer Service by clicking on ‘Customer Service’ at the bottom of your home page. This will allow you to submit your issue and be contacted by a customer service representative. Thank you for your patience in resolving this issue.

  24. @ Jeanne -I have escalated this issue on to Customer Service. The issue of your not being able to display your connections issue should be resolved. In regards to your second item: It is very possible that you may have two LinkedIn Accounts. A customer service rep will be in contact with you within the next 2 days to identify if that is truly the case. Thanks for you patience in resolving this issue.

  25. Looks like I’m having the same problems everyone else is having. All along I thought it was my laptop but it’s now on my PC too. I can’t do anything. When I try it just spins.

  26. I have virtually given up on LinkedIn, which is VERY unfortunate. I have been unable to view my connections for well over 30 days…and what is the point of LinkedIn without that feature??

It appears that many others are experiencing this same challange. I have been informed by a customer service representative that they show no issues on my account…from their perspective. I have logged in/out and attempted to use the site from 3 different browsers, but with the same result…cannot view contacts.

After reading that many others users are experiencing the same issue, the fact that the issue remains after being reported several weeks ago and receiving the same response from LinkedIn support, it becomes more obvious that perhaps LinkedIn cannnot find an issue or is unable to address it.

Regardless…it is unfortunate that such a useful business tool may be lost.

  27. @ Dave – The issue was recently resolved for the majority of members experiencing this issue. It was discovered that members logging into their account from work could not access their connections because the URL string was too long and being rejected by corporate firewalls. The URL string has now been shortened. If the issue continues try using the Firefox browser. This is not a permanent work around and we are continuing to investigate some possible changes that may have been made the IE browser that can at times effect the member experience by somehow not displaying java scripts.

For members having problems accessing their connections list here is another link that should give you access to your information. Click on a name in your connections and go to the profile to send a message.
    http://www.linkedin.com/connectionsnojs.

  28. Dirk,

Alas…I am able to view my connections (re: Post 04/08/09). I am truly LinkedIn again and all systems are a go.

I will have to assume that the long URL string was the issue since the site works on all browsers as well as all computers (home/work).

    Thanks again.

    -Dave

  29. @ Dave -That is so great to hear!

  30. I have not been able to log onto Linked In for over 3 days. I continually get the message, “sorry, this link is broken.” This has happened several times before but it had not happened for a while so I thought the problem was fixed. Help!

  31. @Cheryl – it appears this has been resolved an you have been able to log in. If this is not the case please contact our Customer Service group to assist you in troubleshooting your issue. Thanks.

  32. Is LinkedIn broken? Since a couple of days, LinkedIn doesn’t display correctly. It looks like CSS is not loaded correctly. I tried it both with Firefox & IE. Anybody has the same problem?

  33. Yes, we have been havign the same problem with CSS for some time when users try to access the page from our office.

  34. I haven’t been able to access my connections or send reply to messages for the last 12 days. I’ve tried both Firefox and IE and tried clearing cookies as well, but nothing helps. The first time this happened with my home PC I tried using on my laptop. Everything worked fine for a couple of days and again the same problem-unable to view my connections. Can someone help because I don’t even have access to the support section to lo a complaint.

  35. Laurent, Brad,

I have been having the same problem for several weeks now, as well. LinkedIn’s formatting is completely wonky – most of the time, it appears as though the CSS was either completely missing or not loaded; sometimes it displays the entire page in an 8pt font. Tested in IE7 and FF 3.0.11

    -Aaron.

  36. i’m not able to add a short note when i’m trying to invite a new connection.

next to that today there’s a lot of pages that don’t open on linkedin.

what’s the problem ? and in what time do you expect to have linkedin up and running?

    thx, henk

  37. @boshove (henk)- The issue you are referring to has been resolved you should be able to personalize your messages again. Sorry for the inconvenience.- Dirk

  38. The linked on my LinkedIn profile does not seems to work correctly. Can someone tell me what the problem is.

  39. @ Rajdeep Golecha- If you are still having this issue, please contact our Customer Service team with the following specifics: the link name or title, the page you are attempting to access it from and the specific issue you are having (are you getting an error message, screen won’t display etc). They should be able to begin to trouble shoot your issue. After clicking on Customer Service at the bottom of your home page, you may have to do a search on a topic first. If a FAQ is not provided that answers your question you can click on the ‘Ask Customer Service’ tab(appears after your first search) at the top of the page and provide the specifics I suggested above.

  40. For more than two weeks now i’ve been having challenges accessing my connections.

    What could be the problem?

    Thanks.

  41. Hi,

For the last one month, I have been unable to add any contacts or join groups. In fact apart from logging into my account there is hardly anything I am able to do.
I use IE6.0 and the message that I get is
    “The page cannot be displayed”.

Would really appreciate if someone could help/guide me with this.

I think this is a great tool to stay professionally connected and it would be a shame not to be able to use it..

    many thanks,
    Rajesh

  42. @Rajesh,

Sorry to hear that. I’ve forwarded your issue to our customer service team and they’ll be in touch with you shortly.
