Here in the UK we are starting to emerge from recession. What type of upturn is yet to be seen. One thing is for sure we arent gonna have the trained expereinced people to fill the demand. Just take the HGV Driving industry. No great demand to employ HGV Drivers. Just give it 6 months however. The demand will outstrip supply again.

Another piece of advice that I heard from a headhunter was to try to make yourself stand out in the market - increase your visibility in front of employers and search firms. He suggested exploring opportunities to work with the media (maybe pitch a lifestyle/feature article about the job market and interview your peers), working with trade and industry organizations, charities, etc. An extreme example: a Scotish contruction project manager in Dhubai who was made redundant in January achieved fame after writing a job wanted add onto his Porsche - the media interest and the wide dissemination of his contact details lead to a job in a food and beverage consultancy. Make yourself standout.
