Guess what events my connections are attending?
In November 2008, we launched LinkedIn Events – a product that enabled users to add an event and/or RSVP to an existing event. LinkedIn would let their network know they were attending by sending out a network update and displaying the event as a badge on their profile. Moving forward, we have made it even easier to find what events your professional contacts are attending or speaking at.
We have put together an experience that many users have been asking for: a way to see what events your connections are attending. Also on the new LinkedIn Events home page is a list of the most popular events in your industry, the events that you have RSVP’d to, all event related network updates, and the ability to search all of our events, add an event, or express interest in enhanced event listings.

To view the new home page you can either click on Events from the left hand navigation found under the Applications menu, from the events module on the home page, or by directly going to the LinkedIn Events hub.
As always, the team (Christian Niles – software engineer, Barbara Raitz – software engineer, Jeremy Gillick – web developer, Frank Ramirez – design) would love to get your feedback on the new feature. Please respond to this post via comments with your thoughts!

What a great idea!!!!!!!

This is a great feature, and excellently designed!
The ability to search for events in a specific location doesn’t seem to be working. E.g.,I searched for any events anytime in “Washington, DC” and found zero. Then I searched for any event anywhere and found one in Austin, TX. I then searched for any events in “Austin, TX” and found 0.

Hi,
Love the updates – makes it easier to know what my colleagues are doing and stumble events that could be useful for me.
Are there any thoughts on integrating events with groups? My organization is a trade association that produces 100+ events a year. We just started a LinkedIn group that is gaining traction. If we could post events and then list them in our group (without the convoluted work around of posting a link to the event), it would close the loop for us significantly.
Regards,
Frank

Looks great. By defaulting to what my connections are attending makes it much more relevant. My issue was that before it would show events in the industry I used in my profile, which was banking. But I wanted to view a e-learning, which is the industry that is more relevant to what I do AT my bank. I since changed the industry in my profile, but this new events feature does not constrain users to defaulting to events in their industry alone.
Thanks!

Wonderful LinkedIn Colleagues,
Love the events function! We’re using it on multiple levels.
But….
Search function is a bit hinky, doesn’t always return what you would expect (has some major challenges around returning items in right location)
And, like Frank above, closing the loop by linking the events to the groups would be incredibly helpful. Need an ‘events’ tab on the groups page, etc. Any way that we can help?

@ Jeffery – We are glad you like it.

I think an integration with Groups would be ideal. Right now, I’m trying to figure out how to share information on conferences aside from responses to a monthly discussion item. If Events were integrated, I could simply encourage our Group members to fully utilize the Events feature in order to see their activity within our Group’s environment. Any chance you’ll be adding that anytime soon?

@Jay,
Thanks for your feedback. The team is working on ways to improve your groups experience, along similar lines.

when i use the search feature i choose “any upcoming events’ and chicago area and nothing comes up. However if i choose “any upcoming events” and “anywhere” and put Chicago in keywords I get 300 events pop up. Why doesn’t it work w/ the chicago area feature?
Dirk Frey May 27th, 2009
@Kristin- Good point! I’ve forwarded this item on to the product owner for review. Thanks for catching this.

@Jen,
We love the new events functionality. Others are talking about closing the loop between events and groups. I agree, that would be even better. Since I’m working for a large events organizer, I also hope that someday there will be a linked-in API which we could integrate in our events registration. As you might know all events have their registration set-up with lead retrieval functionality for visitors who visit booths of exhibitors. If during registration we could reconnected to Linked-in with “see which of your connections have also registered” I think user numbers of both our events and the event page of linked in could grow significantly.
Best, Rianne

Interesting, can any kinds of events be added ? For example something that’s like a Trade Conference or a Company Event ?
Matt Harlow June 12th, 2009
I love this app and the travel app but they need to speak to each other. I do some speaking and attend a lot of conferences and club meetings. I wish I could enter a conference in the travel and events apps without retyping everything.
Keep up the great work!

This is an incredibly cool feature. In San Diego was president of a chapter for a worldwide society I am in and this would have saved us so much time in organizing events with other chapters in LA, Orange County, etc. I tried using Facebook but it just isn’t in the same league as Linkedin when it comes to professional society events. I will defiantly be trying to push this forward with our new leadership. Thanks!

@Trace,
Thanks for your praises! Best of luck with discussions with your leadership team.

do you know why I can no longer access an event that I added last month? any change in the features?
Walt Hansmann October 6th, 2009
10/6/09 … where did the Events application disappear to? I used it frequently to post events and connect with people.
