    Independence Day is a day to reflect, celebrate and remember those who serve our country. I personally feel lucky to be in a position to shape the lives of the men and women who’ve sacrificed so much for our freedoms.

    This past weekend, we reflected on the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. We are a nation with an incredible tradition of sacrifice and military excellence. I was lucky to be a part of this community for a period of my life. The most meaningful experiences I had in the military were related to people — men and women who put themselves in harm’s way for the sake of fellow soldiers or innocent civilians. As I write these words, my mind is filled with vivid images of the heroes I worked with who gave their lives during my deployment to Iraq from 2007-2008: Kyle Norris, Darris Dawson, Wesley Durbin, and Ronald Phillips.
