New Features To Make Your LinkedIn Messaging Experience Even Better

Behind every opportunity is a private conversation. Professionals are using LinkedIn to connect about opportunities, set up virtual catch ups, and discuss the latest trends and insights in group chats. Over the past five years, we’ve seen messaging between LinkedIn members more than quadruple. To help keep the conversations going, we’ve added a variety of new messaging features to give you richer ways to communicate and more control over your conversations and messages. Here’s what they are and how to use them:

Kick off a video meeting

Face to face interaction is as important as ever before. Whether you’re sharing career advice, chatting about potential job opportunities, or catching up in virtual group get-together, easy access to your online meeting tools will help you bring that online conversation to life with just a few clicks. That's why this Fall we'll be making it easy for you to switch the conversation from chat to face-to-face using Microsoft Teams, BlueJeans by Verizon, or Zoom directly in your LinkedIn messages. Look for this tool coming soon!

video meetings via LinkedIn

How to use it: Whether it's an existing conversation or you're starting a new one, click on the video icon next to where you'd type a message. From there you'll see a pop-up where you can choose from Teams, Zoom, or BlueJeans and a prompt to sign in. You can share a unique link to start an instant meeting or schedule the meeting for later.

Edit your message or delete it altogether

It can be stressful perfecting that message to a recruiter or asking for an introduction from a mutual connection -- only to realize you’ve made a typo or used the wrong “too.” With the ability to now edit your message, you can quickly and easily correct a mistake. If the message is no longer relevant, or you sent an attachment by mistake, you can also now delete it.

How to use it: On mobile, press-and-hold or double tap on the message to open up a menu of options. On desktop, hover over the message until you see a pop-up with “...”. From there you’ll see the options to edit or delete.

React to a message with an Emoji

When there aren’t enough words to express your thoughts or simply not enough to say, emojis are there for you! Give a quick “thumbs up” to something shared, or quickly react to a Story you’ve seen from one of your connections.

How to use it: On mobile, press and hold or double tap on any message to open up a menu of options. On desktop, hover on a message to get the same set of tools.

An easier way to bulk-manage your messages

Whether you like to keep a 0-message inbox or do some quick maintenance on older messages, we’ve made it easier to select multiple conversations at a time to archive, delete or mark them read/unread all at once.

How to use it: On mobile, at the top right hand corner of the app, tap “...” to access the menu where you’ll see an option to "manage conversations.” Alternatively, you can also press and hold on a message until you see check boxes next to each message. Check the box next to each message you want to manage and select from one of the options: Mark unread, Delete, or Archive. On desktop, hover over a message to see the option to select multiple messages so you can take the same set of actions.

Report inappropriate messages without hesitation

Help keep the LinkedIn community safe by reporting messages that are unprofessional, offensive, or harmful. In-line message warnings help you quicker identify inappropriate, inflammatory, or harassing so you can report bad actors.

How to use it: If you see an in-line warning that means the message was automatically flagged for an issue. You’ll have the option to view (and report), or dismiss and mark as safe. This will signal to us any unwanted messages from senders, and allow us to take appropriate action, including reminding senders of our policies.

Invite others to join a conversation

Whether you’re making an introduction, sharing news with others, or looping an expert into a conversation -- whatever the reason, we’ve made it easier to invite others to join into a conversation while giving you the right controls to keep your original conversation history private.

How it works: From your existing conversation, go to the top right hand corner “...”, and click “new group chat” and add others to join. This will create a new conversation and your original conversation history will remain private.

As stated earlier, we hope these new features help make your messaging experience easier as you engage with other professionals across the LinkedIn community. We encourage you to keep the conversations going and try out some of these new features!
